Objectives: This study investigated the experiences of supervises with videotaped supervision (VTS) in family therapy.
Methods: Fourteen graduate students majoring in family therapy participated in two hours of supervision under a certified MFT supervisor once a week during a 15-week semester. Information from two types of questionnaires were collected: An open questionnaire was used to ask about the supervisees¡¯ experiences of VTS, and a Likert-type questionnaire was used as a pre- and post-test measure. Data were analyzed using content analysis and a paired t-test.
Results: Through VTS, the supervisees learned factors drawn from first-order cybernetics, such as therapeutic structure, techniques, and the dynamics of client families. From second-order cybernetics, they learned factors such as self-reflection, diverse viewpoints/multiple realities, and the influence of therapists¡¯ neutrality and counter-transference on the therapeutic process. Supervisees described several difficulties?emotional, technical, and therapeutic?with VTS in supervision. Supervisees reported improvements in their family-system and post-modern perspectives after VTS.
Conclusions: Despite various difficulties, VTS is an effective supervision method for training family therapists in first- and second-order cybernetics.
